About

I’ve had my hands in some form of technology most of my life. My earlier years were mainly general repair of PC’s, fixing and maintaining Windows workstation and servers starting with friends and family and eventually growing into a small business my father and I started and maintained for 3 years or so. Currently I have a 9-5 at a publishing company doing software development, mainly PHP, with a bit of data mining/user tracking thrown in the mix. I also maintain 2 vet’s offices in my ‘spare’ time, nothing crazy, 2 linux servers with 30 or so workstations. Development is still fairly new to me as I’ve only been doing it professionally for about a year and a half. I made the switch to the dark side (linux) about 10 years ago, starting with Debian for the first year or so, moving to Gentoo for a few years and currently using a mixture of Gentoo/Ubuntu/CentOS over various computers. Some of my hobbies include Asterisk, Home Automation, Bash scripting, and general linux administration.

Hey Tim, the site is looking great. Lots of cool stuff. Thought I’d let you know I’ve started New Horizons for Systems Administrator. A+, Network+, Security+, Linux+ and a bunch of Vista courses. I mainly just wanted to thank you again for introducing me to Linux. It has become my main interest over the last 3 years and my main goal for the future is to be a Linux technician. Hopefully for IBM or somewhere reputable.

Give me a call if you want to talk some computer talk.

Hey man, good to hear from you. Sounds like you’re on the right track, that’s fun stuff! The past year and a half I’ve been doing development, mostly PHP at my 9-5 and still have my vet’s office I’ve managed to tame (IE: the Avimark+Linux post). The wife and I have been a bit busy recently, we’re closing on a house we had built on Friday, but I would like talk sometime in the near future.

Wow, congrats man! My girlfriend Pam and I moved into Turkey Creek up 441 and we’re actually living entirely off of eBay and basic computer repairs on the side. I’m deep into my MCSA++ courses now and spending all of my time studying. I’m actually in class right now. But yeah man, besides that I’m usually free so give me a call or maybe we can meet up and have lunch.

Have you used Windows 7 yet? I don’t know if it’s all the Microsoft certifications pushing me into Windows land or what but I am loving it.

I’ve used it once or twice at work, but never on any of my PC’s. I know my dad (former MCSE) thinks it’s the greatest thing since sliced bread. I have a feeling one day I’ll have to install/maintain it at the vet’s office, but until then, XP runs PuTTY wonderfully :-)

Hey Tim, I know it’s been a while but I’m working on a project and was wondering if you would be interested in helping out. I’m working for a company called Prioria, a robotics company in Gainesville who makes UAVs for the canadian government. I’m taking over the Linux administration side and am trying to install Linux on an old Apple Xserve G4. I found a blog here: http://blog.christophersmart.com/2009/07/23/linux-on-an-apple-xserve-efi-only-machine/

But this is all a little over my head. I’m working to familiarize myself with everything but I’m still deep in study for my Microsoft courses. Think you could help?

Give me a call at 386-315-0299
