Hey Tim, I know it's been a while but I'm working on a project and was wondering if you would be interested in helping out. I'm working for a company called Prioria, a robotics company in Gainesville who makes UAVs for the canadian government. I'm taking over the Linux administration side and am trying to install Linux on an old Apple Xserve G4. I found a blog here: http://blog.christophersmart.com/2009/07/23/linux-on-an-apple-xserve-efi-only-machine/

But this is all a little over my head. I'm working to familiarize myself with everything but I'm still deep in study for my Microsoft courses. Think you could help?

Give me a call at 386-315-0299

I notice you have sections in samba with locking both on and off. I would be nervous about not implementing strict CIFS compatibility for Avimark, from what I can tell it relies heavily on native file system locking. I assume you have not experienced any problems with locking off?

This is a fascinating post because I am nearly complete with setting up a very similar configuration with Virtualboxed Windows clients accessed via PXE-booted thin clients over the network. I installed a Windows "server" in Virtualbox but I guess I didn't realize that if AVIMark is only being accessed via the network, the Windows server is unnecessary (modulo support requirements mentioned by another commenter). Because I'm considering transitioning to pure thin clients over time, I am concerned with USB redirection of some peripherals (e.g. label printer) which will have to be installed at physical client machines. The other nice thing about having a dedicated Windows server image is that you can jail all the Windows machines on their own internal-only Virtualbox network :)

How about creating an installation script that will install your configuration on a server. I would pay you for that!!!

Been managing a vet office for a number of years now so this article had instant appeal to me. Have limited time with Linux (have messed with it for years but never become extraordinarily proficient) so I understand the benefits of a SAMBA server and it interests me. I would love to get away from WinBoxes altogether. Just wondered if this was practical or if AVImark would have stability issues if it was being run from Linux Boxes with either WINE or Virtual Box. The reason I am interested in straight Linux is for security and expense of keeping current operating systems on 9 or 10 workstations. Looking forward to your Part 2, and thanks for going to the effort for publishing something that probably 4 of us are interested in!....Thanks again.

<a href="#comment-944" rel="nofollow">@Brian </a>
Well, this article is fairly dated at this point, even though much stays the same, the improvements in Virtualbox and some of the crons I've added to tend to the common 'issues' I had originally had have been tremendous.

I'm working on 'Part 2' which goes into much greater detail about the specifics, but I will say it was almost like shooting myself in the foot, I was having to tend to the servers at minimum once a month with Windows Server 2k3, now, nearly everything is automated and I receive status reports via emails.

Check back for Part 2 towards the end of this week.

<a href="#comment-929" rel="nofollow">@Ryan </a>
I've used it once or twice at work, but never on any of my PC's. I know my dad (former MCSE) thinks it's the greatest thing since sliced bread. I have a feeling one day I'll have to install/maintain it at the vet's office, but until then, XP runs PuTTY wonderfully :-)

Our practice has been asking McAllister dev team for a linux friendly version of avimark for years (preferably one that works with google docs or open office). It appears that McAllister is not interested in that direction even though it would save their clients money by getting them off the microsoft teat for OS and office productivity software. I'll probably give your article a try to see what the tradeoffs are by running this (I'm an Ubuntu flavored geek). Thanks.

What I'd really like is for someone to create a cloud based VPMS. I've seen OpenVPMS, but it doesn't seem to be up to snuff yet.

Cheers.
