Which of My Lutron Caséta Controls Need a Neutral Wire?

Home Assistant identifies 23 installed Caséta load controls in my house: nine PD-6WCL dimmers, eleven PD-8ANS switches, and three PD-FSQN fan controls. Only the PD-6WCL is a no-neutral control. The other two need a neutral connection, and that difference matters before I buy anything or remove a wallplate.

The neutral question comes before the smart-home question

A smart switch needs a small amount of power even when the controlled light is off. A neutral wire gives many controls a direct return path for that electronics load. A no-neutral dimmer such as the PD-6WCL is designed to operate differently, through a compatible lighting load.

That does not make “no neutral” universally better. It changes the load requirements and the possible failure modes. An LED can glow, flicker, refuse to reach a stable low level, or fall outside the control’s supported load. The right first questions are what wires are in the box and what load is on the circuit—not whether the device has a Home Assistant integration.

I do not infer wiring from the age of the house, wire color alone, or a software inventory. If I need to open a box, I switch off the correct breaker and verify that the circuit is de-energized. Line-voltage work and local electrical rules are a good reason to use a licensed electrician. This page is a model-selection guide, not a wiring procedure.

PD-6WCL: the no-neutral dimmer in this house

Lutron’s current support page says the PD-6WCL requires no neutral and supports up to 150 watts of compatible dimmable LED load or 600 watts of incandescent/halogen load. Lutron also calls for at least one compatible LED bulb rather than promising that every tiny LED load will behave.

That design is why nine older boxes in this house could become smart dimmers without adding a neutral conductor. It also means I treat the lamp compatibility as part of the switch choice. A dimmer and its bulbs are one electrical system, even if Home Assistant exposes only a neat brightness slider.

The PD-6WCL is not for smart bulbs. Lutron explicitly says its dimmers are not designed to control smart bulbs. A smart bulb expects continuous power so its own radio stays reachable; putting it behind a wall dimmer gives two devices competing control of the same power.

I keep the original PD-6WCL units that still work. For a new purchase, I would check Lutron’s current model selector and compatibility tool instead of assuming the older installed model is still the best retail choice.

PD-8ANS: the neutral switch Home Assistant reports here

The older Caséta brochure lists the PD-8ANS as an 8-amp in-wall neutral switch and marks the neutral connection as required. Eleven installed controls appear under that model name in Home Assistant.

An on/off switch is the right shape of control when the load should receive full line power or none at all. It is not a substitute for the PD-6WCL merely because both can turn a light off. One is a neutral-required electronic switch; the other is a no-neutral phase-control dimmer with a different load envelope.

I use the Home Assistant model name to find and count devices, but I would still read the label on the physical control before ordering a replacement. Software integrations can group hardware families or preserve identifiers from older product generations. The label in the wall and the manufacturer’s sheet for that exact model settle the purchase.

Lutron’s current switch guidance makes the general decision useful beyond this older model: when a neutral is available, Lutron recommends its neutral-wire switches for the broadest LED fixture compatibility. When no neutral is available and the job is strictly on/off, the answer is a specifically rated no-neutral switch—not a dimmer chosen only because it happens to fit the box.

PD-FSQN: neutral required, and the load must be a fan

Each of the three PD-FSQN controls here has a neutral connection. Lutron’s wiring diagram shows line, fan load, neutral, and ground, and the product is rated for one compatible ceiling fan.

I do not use a lighting dimmer to vary a fan motor. I also do not treat every motor labeled “fan” as compatible. The control is intended for a compatible pull-chain ceiling fan set to its highest speed so the wall control can select the operating level. A DC fan with its own electronic remote system is a different problem.

This boundary has already mattered in the house. One fan sits behind both a Bond-controlled receiver and a Caséta power switch, so a voice command can fail when the wall control has removed power. The neutral wire tells me how the switch powers itself; it does not solve the two-controller state problem. I documented that failure separately in the Bond and Caséta fan article.

Pico remotes do not answer the neutral question

The two PJ2-3BRL remotes and one PJ2-2B remote in this system are battery-powered. A Pico can mount over a wall box and look like another installed switch, but it does not switch the line-voltage load. It sends a radio command to a Caséta load control or the bridge.

That makes a Pico useful for another control location without putting a second smart load controller on the circuit. It does not remove the wiring requirements of the dimmer, switch, or fan control that actually powers the load.

Where Matter bulbs fit

A missing neutral does not automatically send me to Matter bulbs. For permanent room lighting, I still prefer a wall control that leaves the room understandable when Home Assistant is unavailable.

I would use a Matter bulb only where Lutron does not fit the job: a small bedside or kid’s lamp that can remain powered and where color or tunable white adds something useful. I do not put that bulb behind a PD-6WCL or an ordinary wall switch people will naturally turn off.

The practical split is simple. Caséta controls the wiring and the everyday wall interaction. A Matter bulb can fill a lamp-sized gap. Home Assistant coordinates both without pretending they are interchangeable.

My model-selection checklist

  1. Identify the load. Dimmable lighting, plain on/off lighting, and a ceiling fan need different controls.
  2. Confirm the box wiring. I verify neutral availability with the circuit safely de-energized; I do not guess from a photo or software screen.
  3. Read the physical model label. Home Assistant’s device name is a starting point, not the purchasing authority.
  4. Check the manufacturer’s current load table. Wattage, load type, minimum load, motor type, and multi-location wiring all matter.
  5. Keep smart bulbs continuously powered. I do not pair a radio-equipped bulb with a wall dimmer.
  6. Preserve manual control. The room should still make sense during a Home Assistant restart.

My installed count makes the answer look complicated, but the dividing line is sharp: PD-6WCL is the no-neutral dimmer; PD-8ANS and PD-FSQN require neutral. Everything else follows from the actual load and the exact model in the wall.
